Tasting Note: Noon 2011 Eclipse

IMG_5166

1. Introduction:
Unlike the hot and dry vintages of 2007, 08, 09 and 10 in Australia´s McLaren Vale, the 2011 vintage was the complete opposite with cool and excessively wet weather through the growing season.
Too much rain in very short time let to the loss of the entire crop in the Langhorne Creek vineyards.
Therefore, Noon was neither able to produce a Reserve Shiraz nor their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
Luckily the estate vineyard performed better and delivered ripe and healthy fruit for the Eclipse bottling.
Due to that the 2011 Eclipse is made from Grenache (~81%), Shiraz (~13%) and Graciano (~6%) all from estate grown grapes.
The young bottle is in perfect condition with a flawless cork.

2. Appearance:
Deep velvet, crimson. Dark but less dense and lighter than usual.
Vital and beautiful!

3. Nose:
Aromas of Fresh Red Fruit forward. Later more Darker, Ripe Berries.
Red and Black Currant, some Raspberry, Plum and even Strawberry.
Little Fruit in Rum. Perfume and Floral characters of mostly Lavander and Viola. Exotic Spices and Fresh Herbs (Basil). Multilayered with Leather, Leaves, traces of Sweetness and Eucalypt.
Very inspiring, fresh and complex!

4. Taste:
Intense, Fresh Red Fruits. Berries, Cedar and Gooseberry (!)
Exotic Spices, Herbs (Mint, Basil) and Licorice.
Floral characteristics. Delicate Acidity and little, soft Tannins.
Finishes very long with Fruit, Freshness and a great play of Acidity, fine Tannins and warm Spiciness.
Light mouthfeel with a nice texture and perfect balance!

5. Opinion:
Full-bodied, but lighter and fresher than expected. Amazing fruit and complexity!
A beautiful wine from an unusual vintage. Softer tannins and lighter structure make this Eclipse very approachable in its youth.
It´s hard to believe that this wine contains 16% alc. since its perfect tune and harmony.
Drink now or keep it for some more years.

Tasting Note: Noon 2005 Eclipse

IMG_4232

1. Introduction:
Located in South Australia´s McLaren Vale, Noon Winery is well-known for its full-bodied reds made with least intervention in the winery.
Eclipse is Noon´s signature red wine and a blend from predominantly estate fruit from old bush vines of Grenache (~65%) and Shiraz (~35%).
The 2005 Eclipse is made from Grenache (~60%), Shiraz (~34%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (~6%).
The bottle is in perfect condition with a flawless cork.
We decanted the wine and gave it one hour before we started tasting.

2. Appearance:
Deep dark crimson with an inky, syrupy structure.
Vital and beautiful!

3. Nose:
Inviting aromas of Ripe Dark Berries and Cherries. Fruit in Rum.
Multilayered nuances of Fresh Herbs, as Thyme and Lavander, Leather and
freshly baked Cake. Perfume and traces of Vanilla.
Present Eucalypt. Very interesting, rich and complex!

4. Taste:
Dominant and rich fruit flavors of Ripe Cassis, Blackberry, Cherry and Plum.
Again, some Fruit in Rum. Some Herbs and Leather.
Finishes warm and long with beautiful Fruit, peppery Spiciness, Anise and round tannins.
Great mouthfeel with a creamy texture!

5. Opinion:
A full-bodied, rich, intense and concentrated, but balanced wine,
which appears absolutely round with good proportions.
While it drinks beautifully now, it´s good for another 5 years in the cellar at least.
